The paper, published in 2018, covers how the environment influences the development of antibiotic resistance in bacteria. It both deals with transmission of resistant bacteria and how the environment can act as a source for novel resistance genes. The prize was motivated by that the paper is the most cited paper in 2019 of all recent FEMS Microbiology Review papers and clearly outlines an important aspect of the global AMR health problem.
