Functional metagenomics reveals novel, mobile resistance genes in Indian river sediment

Functional metagenomics is a method that allows the discovery of novel resistance genes from complex microbial communities. In the present study by CARe researchers, polluted Indian river sediments was investigated with such an approach.

Seven new resistance genes were found, among those a novel betalactamase that can hydrolyze carbapenems, albeit with limited efficiency. All detected novel genes were associated with plasmid mobilization proteins, integrons, and/or other resistance genes, suggesting a potential for mobility.
