Now, a German team again reveals very high levels of drugs in these environments.
“This basically confirms that problems are not solved, ten years after our first paper showing exceptionally high environmental discharges of antibiotics and other drugs, says Professor Joakim Larsson, director of CARe”.
The study also detect resistant bacteria in the local environment, a possible consequence of antibiotic pollution. While the full research article recognizes that the a direct link to the antibiotic pollution cannot be established given the design of the study, some headlines in media miss out on that aspect of uncertainty (http://www.tagesschau.de/ausland/antibiotika-113.html).
“It is a bit unfortunate to mix hard facts and speculation, Joakim Larsson comments. “The high levels of drugs found have no other reasonable source that manufacturing discharges. That, in itself, is sufficient to cause concern.”
