This paper is one of eight contributions to a forthcoming special issue on the ethics of antibiotic resistance, and scrutinizes the notion of relaxing regulation for the introduction of new drugs in order to facilitate and stimulate research and innovation of new antibiotic formulas, in view of the antibiotic resistance challenge. The authors argue that while principal arguments seem to support this idea, pragmatic concerns about effective implementation and long-term socio-political sustainability may motivate considerable reluctance to lower bars set into place to ensure patient safety and ethical clinical practice.
